Privacy Policy
Smarter is a small daily-learning game you play with friends. We built it to be light and private: no accounts, no email, no passwords, and no ad tracking. This page explains exactly what we keep and why.
What we collect
You don’t create an account. You join a group with a short group code and pick a display name (you choose it — it doesn’t have to be your real name). The only things we store are what the game needs to work:
- Your group — its name, its code, and its members’ display names.
- Your play — the topics you vote for, your quiz answers, and your learning streak.
- Notifications (only if you turn them on) — a device push token, so we can send the reminders you asked for. Turn notifications off and it’s removed.
- Feedback you send us — if you shake your phone or tap “Send feedback,” we store the message you type plus a little context (the app version and which screen you were on) so we can act on it.
We do not ask for or collect your email address, phone number, contacts, location, photos, or any government identifier.
How content is made
Each day’s topics and lessons are drawn from public, reputable sources (encyclopedic and science references) and lightly summarized with Cloudflare Workers AI. Your personal data is never used to generate content.
Analytics — anonymous and aggregate
To understand whether the app is working and growing, we measure usage in a way that can’t identify you:
- Cloudflare Web Analytics — privacy-first, cookieless traffic counts. No cross-site tracking, no advertising profiles.
- Aggregate event counts (e.g. “a topic was proposed”) recorded with random identifiers — never your name, and not linked to you across other apps or websites.
- Error monitoring — we use a diagnostics service (Sentry) to catch crashes and bugs so we can fix them. It records technical error details, not advertising profiles.
- Learning-journey analytics (PostHog) — we use a product-analytics service (PostHog) to see how people move through a lesson (start → quiz → vote), so we can improve the flow. It's tied to a random, anonymous ID it creates itself — never your display name, group code, or anything you've typed — and we don't build a personal profile from it.
We don’t use third-party advertising or marketing SDKs, and we don’t sell or share your data.
Cookies & on-device storage
Smarter sets one cookie: when you create or join a group, we set a single, first-party cookie (smarter_session) that remembers which group and member you are so you don't have to rejoin every visit. It's not readable by JavaScript, isn't used to track you across other sites, and carries no advertising or third-party tracking purpose. We use no ad-network or cross-site tracking cookies of any kind.
The rest of what your device remembers is stored locally in your browser (not a cookie) — things like your group list, your Simpler Questions preference, whether you've seen an intro tip, and the Declared Age Range result described above. This stays on your device; we don't read it directly. If you land on an invite link, the invite code is briefly held in a similar on-device spot just long enough to complete the join, then cleared. See "What we collect" above for what any of this data is used for.
Cloudflare Web Analytics, which we use to measure aggregate traffic, is cookieless by design and sets no cookie or on-device storage of its own.
If you're visiting from the EU: our session cookie isn't used for tracking, advertising, or profiling, and we don't use cross-site tracking cookies, so we don't currently show a cookie-consent banner. This describes our current practice, not a legal certification — if that changes (for example, if we add a new third-party tool that uses tracking cookies), we'll update this page and, if required, add a consent prompt.

Where it’s stored, and for how long
Data is stored on Cloudflare infrastructure (our hosting and storage provider). Groups that go quiet are automatically deleted after about two weeks of inactivity. You can leave a group at any time, which removes you from it.
Children
Smarter isn’t directed to children under 13, and we don’t ask anyone’s age. On Apple devices that support it, if a parent or guardian has already shared an age range with Apple’s Declared Age Range feature showing an account is under 13, our app can receive that signal. When it does, we automatically apply a few extra protections for that session — simpler wording, no optional crash or analytics reporting, no push notifications, and a system-assigned display name instead of one you type in — without collecting any additional personal information. Data from that session is still stored and deleted under the same rules as everyone else’s (see “Where it’s stored, and for how long” above).
Your choices
- Notifications: turn them on or off anytime in the app; turning them off deletes your push token.
- Leave a group: removes your display name and play from that group.
- Delete data: email us and we’ll remove a group or member on request.
Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date above. Material changes will be noted in the app.
